It has been over a century since the establishment of Aslan Cement Inc., the first plant of the Turkish Cement Industry.

  • "Aslan Culture" in Turkish Cement Industry

The book titled "Ilk Cimento Fabrikamizin Oykusu" (The Story of Our First Plant), which was prepared as a consequence of a comprehensive study carried out by academicians for a period of 5 years in cooperation with Turkish Historical Society and Aslan Cement, and which was published in 2004 and updated in 2013, manifests, by relying on miscellaneous historical information and documents, that Aslan Cement has specific importance not only in Turkish Cement Industry but also in Turkish Economic History.

Having a history over a century, Aslan Cement has been a model for the industry with its product and service quality as well as its corporate culture by supplying products for many important constructions in our country. Two anecdotes available in the book are remarkable in these aspects.

İlhan Erşanlı, one of the contractors of the first Bosporus Bridge constructed in 1973, says:

"Directorate General of Highways had a legal doctrine. Cement would be provided to the European side of Istanbul by Zeytinburnu and Ak Cement plants, and to the other side by Kartal and Darica plants. During the construction of the bridge, I had a talk with the British Chief Engineer, and Aslan Cement was commissioned for analysis purposes. Aslan Cement was qualifies as the 4th best cement brand in the world, and was used on both piers of the bridge. In other words, the Directorate General of Highways broke its tradition, and they used Aslan Cement on both Beylerbeyi and Ortakoy piers of the bridge."

Cengiz Ozdemir, who has served as general manager of the plant for many years, says:

"Aslan Cement has brought the advanced technology to Turkish Cement Industry including, for instance, enclosed stock hall, Loesche mill, automatic sampling and sending system, X-ray spectrometer, all of which are great innovations. They also installed precalcination kiln for the first time in Turkey. In addition to these innovations in the industry, farsightedness of plant executives is also of significance. They pioneered the foundation of the Manufacturers Association and Employers Union. These are outstanding advantages brought by the former generation."

Some of the major structures embodying products of Aslan Cement include Bosporus Bridge, Ataturk Cultural Center, Cubuk Dam, Ataturk Airport, Sabiha Gokcen Airport, Kinali - Sakarya Highway, Formula 1 Track, project of Uskudar – Sancaktepe Subway Line, which is still in progress, and Via Port Marin.

  • First Initiatives By Aslan Cement

Aslan Cement demonstrated its environment friendly approach as the first plant having obtained a Type – A Emission License in Turkish cement industry in January 1998. The plant also plays a leading role in the industry with its efforts such as certification of OHSAS 18001 Occupational Health and Safety Management System as well as high international standards implemented in the field of occupational health and safety.

Aslan Cement has offered the first branded products of the Turkish cement industry to the market with its "Customer-Orientation" approach, which can be summarized as development of specific products and solutions satisfying needs and expectations of customers. Aslan Cement inaugurated the age of "branded cement appropriate for the intended use" in the industry with KARAT, the first branded cement developed for plastering and walling applications, and with CEMENTUM®, the first branded cement developed for ready-mix concrete and other industrial applications. It maintained its studies with the cement POWERCEM®, introduced to the market by Aslan Cement in 2003.

  • European Union Certification On Product Quality: CE Certificate

After having obtained ISO 9002 Quality Certificate from Lloyd’s accreditation company in 2000, Aslan Cement was entitled to use "CE Conformity Marking", which means "Compliance with European Norms", by the French Afnor Certification foundation for cement type PC 42,5 in June 2001. Upon obtainment of this certificate in 2001, the product PC 42,5 of Aslan Cement was acclaimed within borders of European Union, particularly in Spain.

ISO 9001, ISO 14001, OHSAS 18001 and ISO 50001 Management Systems have been effectively used, and have been certificated by the Quality and Environment Board.

  • Pioneer in Social Responsibility

Aslan Cement has been the most important source of employment for the local residents for about 3 generations, having become the center of attraction in terms of social and economic development. Aslan Cement put its seal on numerous social responsibility projects, ranging from education to health, in the region. Examples of such activities of the plant include Darica Aslan Cement Industrial High School and Primary School, and the seminars, which were organized in cooperation with Turkish Kidney Foundation, and which raised the awareness of employees and local residents with respect to kidney health and healthy diet.

Aslan Cement, as a centenarian member of the Turkish Cement Industry like the giant plane tree in Darica, where it was established, joined OYAK Cement as of December 30, 2009; and it has been growing and developing along with the corporate culture and synergy.
